Micromobility Rush in the Republic of Serbia – Existing Trends and Future Challenges

Abstract

The expansion of the use of micromobility vehicles has conditioned a number of changes that cities and countries around the world have faced. The lack and inconsistency of the existing regulations and limited infrastructure capacities have been singled out as two central problems that further complicate the process of adequate treatment of this area. On the other hand, the shift of users of traditional modes of transport to the use of new mobility options, at the same time changes their needs, habits and requirements. Some cities and countries have already gone through a period of testing and integration of micromobility into existing urban transport and traffic systems, while a large number of countries are currently in transition. This group of countries also includes the Republic of Serbia, which is actively working on improving the current legislation and examining the existing infrastructure options for the implementation of micromobility vehicles. Accordingly, the main goal of this paper is to present the current situation and the possibility of using micromobility vehicles in the Republic of Serbia. The results of the research presented in this paper are part of the Study "Micromobility vehicles" conducted for the Republic of Serbia, commissioned by the Road Traffic Safety Agency, which defines the basic technical and operational characteristics, classification of vehicles, how to use the existing infrastructure, as well as general conditions for their regulated and mass application.
