Abstract

The fatigue crack initiation behavior of two microalloyed dual-phase steels has been studied. The parameter ΔK/p was used to normalize data concerning crack initiation at the notches. The crack initiation threshold seems to depend on the notch tip radius. The fatigue concentration factor KF, which depends on sharpness, notch depth, and applied stress range, is used to estimate the notch effect. This parameter satisfactorily predicts notch sensitivity. The conditions for non-propagating cracks are determined for microalloyed vanadium-niobium and niobium-containing steels.
