Abstract
The conditions for fatigue crack initiation and propagation in double and triple tempered tool steel .4751 have been investigated. Fatigue crack initiation was analyzed as a function of the ΔK parameter. It was observed that the minimum value of (ΔK/Δσ)th decreased from 620 to 499 MPa with an increasing notch tip radius from 0.4 to 1.5 mm for double-tempered steel and from 620 to 537 MPa for triple-tempered steel, respectively. The fatigue crack growth rate, as a function of stress intensity range for both tempered conditions, was found to follow a relationship as predicted by Paris.
